Greenhouse Location is one of the first things to consider once you have decided you want a greenhouse.
The location is very important because it can determine how well the plants grow. Especially in the winter.
You want a level area that has good drainage. If you don't have a level place with good drainage you will need to make one. It is unsafe to have uneven ground for your greenhouse. If the walls are uneven, the shelves will be uneven and may fall down. It is also pretty hard walking on uneven ground carrying pots or plants or whatever you may be carrying so you need a level area.
Drainage is very important because you don't want to be standing in water while working in your greenhouse. There is a good chance of mold developing if there is a lot of standing water and plants do not like mold. You will also be washing down your walls to get rid of any spider mites and white flies so you need an area with good drainage.
You want the long side of your greenhouse facing south. That way your greenhouse will get the maximum sun especially in the winter when you need all the sun you can get. In the winter five to six hours of unobstructed sun a day is ideal for your greenhouse. Just because it is winter and the air is cold outside doesn't mean that your greenhouse is cold inside. With the sun shining in thru the windows it can get really hot so make sure you check regularly on the temperature unless you have the automatic vents then there is less to do. But you should check your vents periodically to make sure they are working right. It only takes once on a hot day to destroy all the hard work you have put into growing your plants, I know from experience.
If you can't have your greenhouse facing true south then southeast is the next best. If you are going to have a one sided greenhouse try and pick a structure that will give you the most southern exposure, the least desirable direction to face is the north. There is not enough light coming from the north to really grow healthy plants.
You can have a little shade from leafy trees on the south side of your greenhouse because they will provide shade to part of your greenhouse in the summer but the leaves will be gone in the winter and will not block the sun. That is a really practical way to control some of the summer heat in your greenhouse. Of course your http://your-greenhouse-design.blogspot.com/ is very important too. Depending on which design you choose it will determine the amount of sun you will be getting each day.
